Competence Centre of Environmental Planning and Design (CC5)
Competence:
Teaching
The Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management is an autonomous chair within EiABC. The chair, like any other chairs of the institute, has three mandates: teaching, research and Consultancy.Ecosystems provide a wide range of essential goods and services, including food, regulation of climate and nutrient cycling. Due to unsustainable exploitation natural ecosystems in many parts of the world have been damaged to a different degree. In order for ecosystems continue providing the essential services and good, they have to be governed and managed based on appropriate planning approach.
The Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management teach students the theory and techniques of landscape and ecosystem planning for the management of natural areas (national parks, lakes, forests, etc) and working landscapes (agricultural landscape, plantation forest, etc). The Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management teach courses/modules in the bachelor, master and PhD programs.
courses:
- Introduction for Bioengineering Conservation
- General Ecology
- Urban Ecology
- Ecosystem Management
- Planning for Sustainable Natural Areas and Working Landscapes
- Environmental and Landscape Planning and Design for Sustainable Development
- Planning for Soil and water Conservation
- Planning for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Utilization
Research:
Ecosystem planning is the process of land use decision-making that considers organisms and processes that characterize the ecosystem as a whole. The Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management is involved in ecosystem-based applied research both in the natural areas, working landscapes and urban environment. The chair focuses on the application of ecological theories and principles for landscape and ecosystem planning. Research areas of the chair include landscape ecology, restoration ecology, protected area management, aquatic ecosystem management, terrestrial ecosystem management, and watershed management. The chair supports master and PhD students who like to do research based theses.
current research activities:
Currently the Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management is involved in the EU funded Climate Change and Urban Vulnerability in Africa (CLUVA) research project focusing on assessing the vulnerability and adaptation potentials of urban ecosystems to climate change.
Services and consultancy
The Chair of Ecosystem Planning and Management provides consultancy services to governmental and non-governmental organizations and private individuals in the area of landscape planning, land-use planning, protected area management, watershed management, aquatic ecosystem management, and terrestrial ecosystem management.
