Teaching
The chair offers architectural design courses to students of Architecture. Students of Architecture will have the chance to reflect on and challenge the professional experience they have made during their internships in a series of superior academic projects. The chair will enable them to gain expertise in designing buildings through the refined understanding of a great variety of urban, socio-economic, technological and aesthetic issues.

Furthermore the chair is increasingly collaborating with both local and international architectural institutes – such as; the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid, Spain (http://etsamadrid.aq.upm.es), the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands (http://bk.tudelft.nl/en) and the Faculty of Architecture, KU Leuven - University of Leuven (Ghent/Brussels, Belgium) (https://www.kuleuven.be ).Complementary specialized summer school (September 2017), workshops and lectures were held by invited professionals.
Research
The chair conducts a number of researches in the field of architecture and urban studies. Given design courses may advantageously be related to these studies. Amongst the researches the chair conducted and which are currently ongoing are;
- Study about "Public-ness as a distinguished quality of Architecture";
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with other chairs and institutes are "Learning From Bottom", "Designing With Agrostone" and the ""Ethiopian Neufert" - construction code";
- Re-Development strategies for Merkato – a collaborative research (and a possible project) with Faculty of Architecture, KU Leuven - University of Leuven (ongoing)
- Adaptive problem solving research – granted by AAU (ongoing)
Consultancy:
Next to the academic work the chair is conducting consultancy works through direct designs and facilitation and participation in the juries of design competitions. Some of the projects in which the chair initiated and coordinated are;
- City center development of Addis Ababa – an urban design project in which the chair initiated the project in collaboration with the Master plan design office of Addis Ababa and also participated in this huge endeavor;
- Participated in the design of two master planning projects for the office under the Ministry of Labor (BOLSA – Addis Ababa city Labor and Social Affairs Bureau) – these projects are “ Institute for Elders retirement” and “Institute for Rehabilitation of Physically Challenged people”
