Competence Centre of Architecture and Architectural Design (CC1)

Competence:

Teaching

The chair offers architectural design courses to students of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. Students of Architecture will have the chance to reflect on and challenge the professional experience they have made during their internships in a series of superior academic projects. The chair will enable them to gain expertise in designing buildings through the refined understanding of a great variety of urban, socio-economic, technological and aesthetic issues. With students of Urban and Regional Planning, the thresholds among the disciplines of Architecture, Planning and Urban Design are investigated.

courses:

Project Studio II               Arch. Year group IV
Architectural Design IV   Arch. Year group IV
Architectural Design V   Arch. Year group V
Project Studio III   Arch. Year group V
Architectural Design VI   Arch. Year group V

Architectural Design I   URPl. Year group V
Architectural Design II   URPl. Year group V
Bachelor Thesis Advising   Arch. Year group VI

Furthermore the chair is increasingly collaborating with both local and international architectural institutes - most recently with the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid, Spain (http://etsamadrid.aq.upm.es)  and the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands (http://bk.tudelft.nl/en). Complementary specialised workshops and lectures are held by invited professionals - e.g. German public space artist Petra Goldmann. "December Debates" is an annual intensive intellectual debate session mainly focusing on Architectural Theory, Pedagogy and Practice which attempts to define Architecture contextually.

Research

The chair conducts a number of researches in the field of architecture and urban studies. Given design courses may advantageously be related to these studies, e.g. a study about Ethiopian "secondary" cities (Ethiopian cities apart from Addis Ababa) or a study about "Public-ness as a distinguished quality of Architecture". Other current research engagements that are partially conducted in interdisciplinary collaboration with other chairs and institutes are "Learning From Bottom", "Designing With Agrostone" and the ""Ethiopian Neufert" - construction code".

Consultancy:

Next to the academic work the chair is conducting consultancy works on educational campus designs for EiABC and facilitation and participation in the juries of design competitions - the most recent ones being a national stadium design with the capacity of 80000 people to be built in Addis Ababa and an extension building of the parliament of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
