Envision-eering the emerging cities of Ethiopia
In the context of Ethiopia, where cities are envisioned to be created anew, concepts guiding the future city in its inception/process of emergence (designing, planning, and building) demand equal emphasis as concepts guiding the city as an operational entity (evolving product). However, framing concepts for new towns for the future, whose inhabitants to-be are loosely defined, is obviously problematic. Needless to say, in African countries which are passing through rapid socio-spacial transformation, what is aimed at (product) and how to arrive at it (processes) need a clearer vision founded on appropriate experiments and sincere discussions of stakeholders.
The first seminar (seminar 1.0) - in the serious of seminars yet to come explores potentials in the unfolding rapid urbanization in Ethiopia and the challenges in guiding it. It aims to boldly explore lessons from ongoing new town experiments such as BuraNest from the Amhara Regional State within Ethiopia. The five days seminar is open for academics, decision makers, developers, and representatives of various sectors of the society. The seminar is also open for limited PhD and masters students of related fields of study.
