A RESEARCH FINDING ON LOW-COST HOUSING BUILDING MATERIAL AT MRTC
By
Kassahun Admassu (PhD)

This is a research result launched at the Materials Research and Testing Center (MRTC)/EiABC, thanks to the fund allotted by the Institute in 2011. The launch was in compliance with the Center’s establishment delegation and responsibility pillars of: Teaching, Research and Industrial services. It was the first of its kind research fund allocated for the Center in just about thirty five years. It indeed was a moment of golden opportunity of the then ignited reform at EiABC.

The research went through four rigorous phases: Materials identification and laboratory testing including specimen examination, Filing of application based on the finding to the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office for a legal registration and patent, Launching a pilot project as an application and public outreach show case, and publishing a finding article in a scientific journal of international reputation. All the four phases were successfully implemented/completed and the next action is at a pause to jump on to an industrial level of production and subsequent application.

Abstract
The paper presents the results of a research conducted aiming at developing a method of producing building block and mortar from locally available natural soils and earth minerals. The main focus of the effort is to establish or advance wall making building blocks and jointing/binding mortars from amended soils with cementitious raw lime/non-factory manufactured and pozzolanic minerals. The targeted beneficiaries of the success are the over eighty million disadvantaged Ethiopians residing in the rural and semi-rural areas of the country. They deserve a decent, sustainable, eco-friendly and a popular technology based habitat.

The long journey towards achieving the noble goal was initiated by investigating the suitability of soils and earth minerals, preparation and testing of informative specimens and the production of mortar cubes and proto-type building blocks in their actual size to simulate field application conditions. The specifics of this particular move is thoroughly focusing on the two prime parameters of compressive strength and durability (water resistance) which are the determinant factors for the viable application of earth based wall making in puts. The attained results of the effort indicated that the designed mix proportioning of the ingredients confirmed that the products are acceptable both in compressive strength and durability terms for the intended purpose. To this effect, the blocks produced using the proposed method, are named as amended compressed earth blocks (ACEBs).

To conclude, I very much appreciate all the co-operations and supports endowed to me and the team by the EiABC staff and community throughout the just concluded arduous task. It was quite a wonderful time of engagement. Above all, MRTC is wholeheartedly committed to work in unison along all its established pillars. Thank you again for the interest you all show in our services. Let’s move forward!

Germany celebrates 100 years of Bauhaus in 2019. Bauhaus-University Weimar, a close partner of the EiABC will be running an exposé in celebration of the events. The ECL-AA is invited to organize an exhibition illustrating the longstanding relationship of the EiABC (Hintsa College) with the Bauhaus University in Weimar. The exhibition will be held in an Ethiopian Pavilion that will built in Weimar’s Ilm Park.

Thus, the ECL would like to make an open call to 4th year internship students in Architecture, Urban Planning and CoTM programs. The team will be set up with a total of 8 students working on the detail design development (Construction team) of the Pavilion to be built and the contents that will be displayed (Graphic design and research team) within it. The internship begins from the summer (July 1st) and runs till the end of the semester. This team of students will travel to Germany at the end of the semester to construct the designed pavilion.

Envision-eering the emerging cities of Ethiopia

In the context of Ethiopia, where cities are envisioned to be created anew, concepts guiding the future city in its inception/process of emergence (designing, planning, and building) demand equal emphasis as concepts guiding the city as an operational entity (evolving product). However, framing concepts for new towns for the future, whose inhabitants to-be are loosely defined, is obviously problematic. Needless to say, in African countries which are passing through rapid socio-spacial transformation, what is aimed at (product) and how to arrive at it (processes) need a clearer vision founded on appropriate experiments and sincere discussions of stakeholders.

The first seminar (seminar 1.0) - in the serious of seminars yet to come explores potentials in the unfolding rapid urbanization in Ethiopia and the challenges in guiding it. It aims to boldly explore lessons from ongoing new town experiments such as BuraNest from the Amhara Regional State within Ethiopia. The five days seminar is open for academics, decision makers, developers, and representatives of various sectors of the society. The seminar is also open for limited PhD and masters students of related fields of study.

The Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) Rethink the City. New Approaches to Global and Local Urban Challenges, is a free online course taught by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of Delft University of Technology. The course starts on May, 2nd, 2018.

In the Rethink the City MOOC you will learn about today's urban challenges focusing on the Global South. We will debate on three different topics, going beyond traditional urban strategies and policies: spatial justice, housing provision and management, and urban resilience. Additionally, we also have a special module to discuss the three topics in relation to the urban challenges of the African continent. We have the privilege to count with the contribution of scholars and practitioner from different African countries.

Through a combination of short theoretical lessons, presentation of case studies, testimonies from practitioners and practical assignments you will also learn how to develop a critical perspective about your own urban environment and how to translate this knowledge into analytical tools and innovative urban solutions.

Additionally, we have the Rethink the City Prize: we will select 2 participants to come and join our Summer School 2018 here in Delft (more info)!

You can register for free in the course here: https://www.edx.org/…/rethink-city-new-approaches-global-lo…
We are looking forward to rethinking our cities with you!. Follow as in our Facebook Page @Rethink the City
