The Chair of Urban and Regional planning would like to share the information that the proposed M.Sc. Program in ‘Urban Planning’ has been approved by the Senate of the Addis Ababa University. The preparation of the curriculum passed through a number of stages including a series of discussions and consultations within the chair and with other chairs of the Institute, a consultative workshop with main stakeholders who have a vested interest on the program, assessment of the program by internal, external and international reviewers, approval by the council of the EiABC, final presentation to the Addis Ababa University Quality Standards and Curriculum Review Committee chaired by the Vice President of the Addis Ababa University and final approval by the AAU Senate. This final version of the curriculum of the MSc. Program in Urban Planning is the cumulative outcome of the different stages that the program development process went through. The new program will contribute to the strategic plan of the EiABC and will open up new opportunities. The Chair is grateful to the EiABC community, members and the Curriculum Committee of the Chair who have all worked hard for the last two years to reach at this stage.
Just a short walk away from the Church of St. Mary of Zion and the ancient stelae, an impressive new edifice is being constructed in the historical city of Axum. This project is called the Axumite Heritage Foundation Library and Cultural Center and is being developed through the Axumite Heritage Foundation and the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECCD).
The modern, well-equipped library was designed by the Chair of Conservation of Urban and Architectural Heritage of EiABC, Professor Fasil Giorghis. Construction has been completed in 2017, and a grand opening event is planned for 2018. The library will feature a Great Reading Room, a children’s library, auditorium, classrooms, computer stations, and meeting spaces. The entire project is planned to be fully accessible for people with disabilities and programmed with modern library management practices. The building makes use of natural light, rustic stone material, and modern fixtures. The site also includes spaces for local artisans (weavers, potters, artists, etc) to produce and sell their work.
EiABC lecturer Andrew Tadross was recruited to provide the landscape design, which includes extensive stone walkways and outdoor plazas, lighting, seating areas, hundreds of trees and shrubs. An emphasis has been placed on using native plants, and trying to preserve the historic character of Axum while making the site an green oasis in the city.
Recent EiABC graduate Kokeb Dimtsekal has also contributed much needed help in laying out the landscape, creating 3D models, and designing an outdoor café and reading space.
Besides the new library, the site is also home to the former Governor’s Palace – a historical building that was used also as a prison during the Italian occupation. This building has served as the ‘old library’, but will be renovated and converted into a heritage museum in the future. This project will be another source of pride of the people of Axum and contribute to the city’s growing influence as a tourism destination.
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) once again offered its in-country/in-region scholarships for postgraduate studies in Eastern Africa for which EiABC is the national coordinator. Successful Master and Ph.D. candidates will receive financial support to pursue their degrees. This includes tuition fees, a monthly stipend as well as an annual study and research allowance for up to 2 years for Master and 3 years for PhD students.
Being well promoted the call yielded a record number of applications this year. Altogether 41 Master and 11 PhD candidates – the vast majority from EiABC - submitted their papers. Among them 30 percent were female students. The most interest was shown in the M.Sc. Urban Land and Property Valuation and the M.Sc. Landscape Architecture with more than 10 submitted applications each. A Selection Committee comprising of senior academic staff from EiABC will in a next step shortlist the candidates and forward their applications to the DAAD office in Nairobi. Around May a final decision will be made as to who will receive a scholarship.
